Robert Writes In:

I’m having some issues with the thermostat which goes back to the “wake up screen” or other error messages. If I unplug the stove it seems to solve it. Just wondering if this is a common issue and whether there is an updated model or something else going on with the stove?

Mr. Pellethead Replies:

The issue here is likely as simple as the thermostat wire connections.  Three wire system, Red and Green are for power and White is for communication between the wall control and main board.  Dashes in the upper left screen would indicate problems with the white wire connections.  Cycling the wakeup screen is a loose connection of the red or green or both wires.  The interruption could be the crimped connectors at the stove terminal block or the connections inside the wall control.  Could also be a pinch of the t-stat wire between the wall control and the stove.

  1. My Quadrafire Mt Vernon AE stove has been great for the past ten years even though I’ve had to replace everything from the baffle and firepot to the auger assembly. My problems have been in finding listed Quadrafire parts by the part number. The ash drawer catches were worn out and none were to be found except at a local hardware store. Now, I can’t find a dealer who can assure me that the door rope gasket, p.n. SRV7034-177 is correct for my stove. Can I always trust the manufacturer’s part number?

    1. Thanks for contacting us, happy to assist.

Although manufacturers change part numbers over the years, the earlier part number will always supersede. An Authorized dealer has access to the manufacturers database to look up any part number for any part or accessory ever used or sold. It surprises me that the dealer you mentioned couldn’t assure you of the part number for that gasket or ash drawer catches.

Moving forward you can feel free to contact us regarding any needs or questions you may have. We are the largest dealer in the country of pellet stoves and of Quadra-Fire pellet stoves. Although we don’t have every Quadra-Fire part on our website yet, we are continually adding and we do stock virtually every single part for the Mt Vernon AE. So if you can’t find what you are looking for on our site, just drop us a message and we’ll get you fixed right up. We always guarantee the best prices and fastest shipping.

      1. I need a new drop chute, the part that surrounds tha auger
A foreign object caused a fire and destroyed that part

        1. Thanks for the message. Looking through the Mt. Vernon AE service parts manual they do not provide a breakdown or sku on the auger drop chute weldment. Would suggest calling Quadra-Fire direct to see if this is a part that would be available and what the sku is if it is available. See if you can get through to them on this number 800-883-6690. Hope that helps.

    1. Dustin,

Thanks for contacting us. I would first tell you to check all the wires and connections. Then do a hard reset by unplugging the stove and waiting 30 seconds before plugging back in. From there if your thermostat is still not functioning and showing all the aspects and selections, you more than likely will need a new Wall Control.

    2. When you plug in my Mt Vernon stove the exhaust fan turns on then the screen says auto clean and then nothing happens. I disconnected the arm that slide the pot and that moves freely. So the stove stays in auto clean and nothing happens. I have replaced the control board.

      1. Hey Mike, happy to help. Let’s check the wall thermostat wiring first – possible communication issue. Check the white wire going from the stove to the wall unit and check for breaks or kinks in the wire.

        Keep us posted.

        Thanks,

        1. Yeah just checked the wires there was a spot that looked kinked. Cut it out hooked everything back up and still the same problem. I just replaced the auto clean assembly today too.

          1. Thanks Mike. I just forwarded all of our correspondence to our lead MTV AE techs. Will follow-up with you here ASAP.

            Thanks,

          2. Mike,

While I am waiting to hear from our techs, let’s double check the auto clean porkchop/burnpot bottom to make sure it’s not jammed or binding on anything.

          3. Before I changed the auto clean assembly I disconnected the arm going to the burn pot and slid it back and forth just fine. And I just ordered a new one from you guys on Amazon yesterday and a new thermostat.

          4. Hey Mike,

Just heard from our lead MTV AE tech – Is the fire box door closed and the switch contact made and no “door open” icon displayed on the wall control? If the burn pot bottom moves freely without the arm attached then the auto clean motor / switch assembly will need to be removed and tested. Once removed thoroughly inspect the wire harness for damage. Then check the assembly for binding, remove the motor from the assembly and try cycling the auto clean again to see if the motor turns. If not, considering a new board and the wall control displays “auto clean”, the motor needs to be considered for replacement.

            Keep us posted.

  2. Had my Mt. Vernon about 6 years now…having the problem that it just shuts down un-expectantly…starts fine but when goes into Med, burn mode….boom…just shuts down. Tried all sorts of low hanging fruit replacement parts but now think its the control board…thoughts? Just a general comment…Pellet stoves are great when they work…until they don’t. They take lots of maintenance and even then, keep your fingers crossed that none of those moving parts goes out…ha. Can’t beat the good old fashioned wood stove….

    1. I can agree to an extent but just as with any other complex appliance there is maintenance that needs to be done. This holds true with wood stoves as well if you want the units to last. The issue that you describe sounds as though it might be a thermocouple error but there are further questions that I would have to narrow it down to the root problem. Feel free to reach out to our tech support department at (920)779-6647 ext:3721 and our tech support guy Greg is more than happy to help solve this issue.

  3. My Mt. Vernon AE is not giving any error codes at the moment, but is not igniting. It cycles through the start up for a long period of time then does a cleaning, dumping all of the unused pellet into the ash pan.

  4. When you plug in my Mt Vernon AE the exhaust blower turns on and then the screen says auto clean but nothing is happening. I replaced the control board, and just replaced the auto clean assembly. What should I try next?!

  5. Hi,
I have a Quadra-Fire Mt. Vernon AE that is about 9 years old. With increasing frequency the stove is failing to start at pre-programmed times. The wall display shows ——— Often I can get the stove to start by going to the comfort setting, adjusting the temperature to what is set for and to select “Hold” . Then the stove usually goes to start-up after 10 seconds or so.
I have cleaned the wires and know the wires are in good shape. A troubleshooting PDF says it is either a failing wall controller or the control board. Does this sound right and if so how can I tell which it is without playing expensive trial and error?

    Thanks!

    1. Thanks for contacting us. Ran this past our lead Mt Vernon AE Technicians. Notes:
If I’m understanding the email correctly he is experiencing the dash lines at the top left of the wall control. If this is the case it would indicate a communication interruption between the wall control and the board. When you see this the control board will follow the last command from the wall control. It also sounds as though this is an intermittent problem that seems to remedy itself while handling the wall control. There are several connection points throughout the communication circuit, including any point in the wire, that have the potential to become faulty. In this case it appears to be in the wall control so if the wire connection (white wire) is tight the other issue inside the wall control that will typically go bad is the three prong plug connection between the two halves.
I would suggest to continue trying to isolate the connection problem in the wall control by clearing the dashes with wiggling the wires or squeezing the two halves tighter together.

Keep us posted, happy to help!

      1. Hello,
Thanks for all the information. I took the face of the wall control off, cleaned it up a bit inside and reattached it. So far so good; although I imagine a true solution will require more work on my part. Thanks for giving me a place to concentrate my efforts!

        1. Great to hear, and happy to help. Keep us posted and you have any other questions just let us know.

          Thanks!

  6. I have a Quadra Fire Mt Vernon pellet stove….it has dotted line on the thermostat so we tried to figure out what the issue is because our pellet won’t start…

    1. Hey Melinda,

Thanks for contacting us, happy to assist. The 3 dots or dashes on the wall unit indicate a communication error between the stove and the wall unit. Check the connections on both ends of the thermostat wiring and make sure they are secure and making good contact. If that is all good it could be an issue with the wall unit itself. Here is a link for reference. https://pellethead.com/product/quadrafire-mt-vernon-ae-edge-60-wall-control-thermostat/

Keep us posted, happy to help.

      Thanks,

  7. I have a mt Vernon Quadra fire that will burn through multiple cycles and then the thermostat will be in the off position. I have to reprogram to auto on and what type of fuel I am burning. Also resets all programmed settings. Any idea what could be causing this ?

    1. Hey Nick, Just ran this past our tech team – “I am leaning towards this being a faulty wall control unit. The wall unit will hold power for memory for a decent amount of time so the resetting part would not be happening. If it was a communication issue the board it would most likely be freezing up and not functioning. Hard to say for sure but I am 75-80% leaning towards the wall unit.”

Do you have a local dealer near you where the wall control could be tested? If not, we do offer a testing service. If needed, you can reach us at 800-236-6647. Thanks!

  8. Have a MT Vernon Quadra Fire AE. About 10 years old. Changed the igniter which I have done many times. It ran fine for 2 days but stopped today. I pulled out the igniter and it had a small burn hole at the base by the wing nut. Replaced again but nothing happening. Checked the second igniter and getting about 47 ohms so seems all good. I then checked the voltage at the igniter connectors and getting almost nothing ~ 1 volt. I have not gone any further but thinking a blown igniter fuse in control board? Bad board? Incidentally I think the igniter I first replaced might still be ok? I checked with ohmmeter and getting 48 ohms which is in range. Anyway, thoughts on next steps?

    1. Thanks for contacting us John. You’re on the right track. We would suggest checking the igniter fuse on the board and check the motherboard for any damage in the corner the igniter plugs into. The igniters are within range and with there not being power present that would be the next logical step. Keep us posted, happy to assist.

      1. The board and plugs look good with no visible damage. The 15 amp fuse is toast. None available at the hardware store so have on order… Should be good when I replace. Thanks for the help.

  9. I have a Quadrafire Mt Vernon AE. I keep getting an auger jammed error. I have removed and cleaned out the auger chamber several times and there has never been a jam. Replaced the optical sensor and the auger motor still getting the error. I also noticed that the pellets are backed up in the drop tube when the error message appears. What would be causing the pellets to back up in the drop tube?

    1. Hey Donalee,

Happy to assist. I would check for foreign objects or abnormally long pellets in the feed tube or drop chute. It sounds like something went through the feed system and is now lodged. Get a good light and do a thorough inspection. Keep us posted, happy to help!

      1. No foreign objects or abnormally long pellets. I have now replaced the control board, but still getting the auger jammed error message. The stove will only run for about 45 minutes before the error message comes on again. Any idea what could be going on?

        1. Thanks for the message Donalee. If you can call in and speak with our technical team I think that will be the fastest to find the resolution here. Call in to 800-236-6647 and ask for our technical support team.

          Thanks,

  10. Hi 6year old quadrature MT Vernon stove shut down last nite after working fine minutes before shutdown. Checked for green or red light nothing showing thought breaker. Breakers were fine . moved plug to another outlet green light came on. Tried to cycle through no pellets dropping motor runs green light stays on will not start up. Any ideas for possible fi,es

    1. Thanks for contacting us Chuck, happy to help. Is this a Mt Vernon AE model or an original Mt. Vernon with the 4 speed control? I think first it will be important to check the outlet voltage and polarity to ensure electrical is correct coming to the unit. From there depending on your model we can help troubleshoot some possible things to look at. Feel free to message back here or call us at 800-236-6647.

      Thanks,

  11. I have a MT Vernon and hadn’t used it all summer then noticed wall unit was not working. I checked everything and assumed it was faulty cause I had one go before. Now it’s hooked up and nothing! Before I buy a control board as suggested do you have any ideas?

    1. Thanks for contacting us. I would suggest looking at the basics first. Double check the wall outlet and make sure that the voltage and polarity is correct. From there I would inspect the connections and wiring to the wall control as well as the control board/circuit board. Make sure everything appears to be connected securely and there are no issues with the wiring and wiring harnesses in the unit. Next let’s double check the fuse/s in the control/circuit board. Happy to help, keep us posted.

      Thanks,

  12. My Vernon AE saying jammed convection blower. Blower was getting noisy so I replaced it. Ran for a couple days and have the same jam error. Thinking the board is going. Anything I can check first?

    1. Hey Scott,

Thanks for contacting us. I have passed the message along to our lead tech to gain some greater insight; I will follow-up. In the meantime, double check the wire connections, double check the blower impeller to ensure nothing foreign got in there and it’s not stuck/jammed. With the stove off you should be able to move that impeller freely. From there do a hard reset by unplugging the stove and re-plugging in after 30 seconds – could be a fault error code. I’ll keep you posted with any further info from our tech team. Thanks!

      1. I have a similar issue. Blower started getting noisy all of a sudden. I removed it cleaned it thoroughly, I could tell the bearing was making a little noise. It reinstalled it and ordered another blower. New blower is noisy and in two days I got an auger jam error. Has been working OK for another couple days, but still noisy.

        1. Thanks for contacting us. HHT does provide a 1-year warranty on replacement parts. It’s odd that a new blower would be noisy, but if the replacement blower is abnormally loud/noisy, then we would recommend contacting the dealer it was purchased from and filing warranty on it so you can get a replacement.

If it was purchased through our company, please email [email protected] to start the process.

          Thanks,

          1. So an update, I discovered that the connector to the snap switch on the drop tube was chard, so replaced it, everything seemed fine the new blower ran quiet for two days, then stopped working. I discovered it was also chard from the blower harness to the circuit board. Where could the extra Amp draw be coming from? I checked input voltage to the board and got 14.9 V DC, but jumping around, could the inverter be going out?

          2. Thanks for the reply back. Ran this past our lead Mt Vernon AE tech, here are his notes: The DC power supply should be steady, typically 15V dc. For the most part the 15V supply is crucial to run all DC components at the same time which will cause a slight voltage drop. The power supply is also the power source outputting a specific maximum of 15V with a small amount of available amps which a component failure won’t change. That being said, if there were surging from the supply I would expect other component connections to suffer the same fate. The power supply does have an audible beep sound if any switch, harness wire or component is directly shorted to ground. These charred connections could simply be spade connector or molex/harness connections that failed, the new fan could also be defective, happens all the time and testing the components is the only way to know.

Keep us posted, happy to help.

  13. I have a Mt Vernon AE, The igniter went out and I replaced it. Now when I start the stove the pellets drop and I hear the exhaust fan running, no glow from the igniter and no fire. Where should I look to resolve this issue. Thanks

    1. Thanks for contacting us Randy, happy to help. Let’s first start with the basics.

      1. Double check the electrical connections of the new igniter
      2. Double check the mount of the new igniter
      3. Double check the connection of the igniter wire harness to the control board
      4. Let’s check the ohms of the igniter to ensure the replacement is in proper range. If you put in the 380 Watt OEM Loop Igniter, Ohm Range is 35.5 – 43.5. Here’s an igniter blog for further info and Ohm reading outlines. https://pellethead.com/how-to-test-and-replace-a-stove-igniter-pellet-stove-ignition-troubleshooting/
      5. Let’s make sure the front firebox door and ash pan door are sealing well all the way around

If we are still in the same position after these checks we can follow-up with some further technical insight and troubleshooting; just keep us posted.

      Thanks,

  14. Mount Vernon AE . Thought it was a bad igniter, changed igniter. Pellets are dropping, draft motor is running. I have 46.3 ohm’s on igniter. All 3 igniter ohm between 46&48. I tested power coming off board with igniter unplugged. During ignition start up, I have no power coming from board. Is there anything else in series that would not let igniter energize through the board or is this a board?

    1. Hey Travis, thanks for reaching out. Please check the igniter wire harness at the board. If it’s burned, the board is bad. If it looks good, check to see if you have the fused igniter wire harness; might be a blown fuse in the harness itself. Here is the replacement harness – currently Out of Stock, but more arriving next week. https://pellethead.com/product/quadrafire-mt-vernon-ae-edge-60-ignitor-wire-harness-oem/.

Keep us posted, happy to help.

      Thanks,

      1. Hi, same issue here…sort of. My circuit board fried at the ignitor 2 years ago. Replaced board. Now it’s happened again. Cause?

        This is get costly.

        1. Thanks for contacting us Keith. Can you verify if you have the fused igniter wire harness in your model? (Reference Below) If you are burning only pellets we also recommend to go down to the 300W igniter instead of the factory 380W igniter. If you are burning any mixture of other fuels you will want to keep the 380 watt igniter in place. https://pellethead.com/product/quadrafire-mt-vernon-ae-edge-60-ignitor-wire-harness-oem/

Keep us posted, happy to help. Thanks.

          1. Thanks for the message back Keith. Glad to hear you have the igniter wire harness with the inline fuses. If there is a burnout or short with the igniter element, it should hit those fuses to prevent damage to the board. I’m not sure how your board has been damaged now twice with the fused wire harness in place. You may want to call Quadra-Fire directly on that. Double check the fuses with a continuity meter to ensure they are good.

            Thanks again for reaching out.
            Sincerely,

  15. My mt vernon is blowing fumes in my house can’t figure it out they make you sick can’t run the stove I seal all the stove pipe still does it very frustrating!

    1. Edward,

It is very important you get this issue fixed prior to operating the stove again. The fumes/exhaust is coming from the stove vent/piping – either where it connects to the stove on the exhaust hub or on the venting seams. Vent piping leaks around the seams and seals. Whether we install or the customer installs, we require a specialty carbon monoxide meter to be used to ensure there are no exhaust leaks. If you are a customer of ours please call us to schedule a professional inspection, otherwise please call the dealer you purchased the stove from to have this service completed.

Any questions please let us know.

      Thanks,

  16. Hi
Quick question my Mount Vernon starts fine burns for about 15-20mins runs through the auto-clean and then says minimum fire pot temp error. I reset it starts either burns again for one cycle and same then the thing happens. After the second time I push the reset button to clear the error it just says ready. I can turn it off raise the temp it doesn’t turn on. I need to unplug it and reset the stove. This cycle repeats sometimes 1-3 not sure why. When it finally starts to run it will run for days with no issues as long as it doesn’t run out of pellets.

    Any thoughts?

    1. Thanks for contacting us Joseph. In speaking with the tech team after sharing your breakdown, it’s suggested to check the thermocouple here first. The Thermocouple hangs over the burnpot and has a ceramic cover that goes over the end. Let’s pull the cover off, inspect and clean off any ash build-up, and make sure the wire connections are secure. Here is the thermocouple for reference https://pellethead.com/product/quadrafire-mt-vernon-ae-edge-60-thermocouple-k-bundle/. Keep us posted, happy to help.

  17. I have an AE with power problems. I have 15v DC to the control board. There is not 3 volts coming out of the board to the stat. Nothing at the connection for the thermostat plug. I put an external power supply of 3 volts to the wall control and it lights up but that is all. I am guessing that 3 volts is just the original voltage and it changes as the unit goes thru its phases of operation. Had the same problem recently and replaced the main board. The new board worked for 3 tries(auto clean rails dirty). Cleaned those and nothing. 15 volts thru the snap disc. No 3 volts to the wall control. Could it be the logic this runs under is ladder and one of the components is not giving a signal to allow power Nothing to the stat. I cant believe this board is bad also. What caused it to Fail ? What am I missing?

    1. Thanks for contacting us. We are running this past our lead technicians right now. Quick initial question: Are you checking voltage directly at the board or at the end of the wires? We will follow back up shortly. Thanks.

    2. Thanks for your patience. Here are the notes from our lead Mt. Vernon AE Technician.

      AE Wall Control circuit from the motherboard molex includes three wires, red & green for power and white for communication. This circuit is also polarity sensitive and powered by 3.3 volts DC. I would proceed as follows;

      1. Unplug the 3 wire harness cable from both the board and the wall control terminal block.

      2. Remove the t-stat cable wires from the wall control terminal block.

      3. Remove the t-stat cable wires from the stove wall control block.

      4. Carefully check for 3.3 volts directly from the board terminals. No voltage = board. Voltage = next step.

      5. Plug the wire harness molex to the board and check the spade terminals. No voltage = harness. Voltage = next step.

      6. Plug the harness to the back of the t-stat block and check the screw terminals for voltage. No voltage = terminal block. Voltage = next step.

      7. Connect the three wires to the stove block and check for voltage at the WC end. No voltage = the wire or crimped connectors (the weakest link in this circuit) Voltage = next step.

      8. Connect the last wire ends to the wall control block and test voltage.

Somewhere between #4 and #8 the voltage either doesn’t exist or stops. Once again, 3.3 volts as indicated in the manuals, I’ve never encountered a reading other than this.

Keep us posted, happy to help however we can.
      Appreciated.

      1. Thank you so much for your quick response. As per your instructions, steps 1,2 and 3 complete. Step 4. No voltage across red and green. Bad Board. Agreed. Why?? This is a replacement board with three auto clean failures. The auto clean device was taken apart and cleaned, rails sanded and dry lubed. It worked well. Then a firepot TC failure. The loose connection was corrected. Plugged it in to try again. Nothing but a blank screen. I have checked every plug for unwanted grounds. Checked for incoming voltage (15) and followed it through the snap disc. No voltage anywhere else. Control board #2 with the same problem. I was a military (Navy) DC electrician in my former life, so I know my way around with a Fluke multimeter.

I am so confused as to why this failure is happening. Expensive failure, I might add! I am sure the first time I checked for 3.3 after the blank screen there was a brief reading of 1.6v … then it was gone. I am beginning to believe there is a weak component, not fuse protected., failing In both boards. Why? I have lots of Why’s, but this is the crucial one!!

Thanks in advance for any and all help I can get. A truly awesome stove for many years.
        Greatly appreciated. Thank you

        1. Thanks for the detailed message back. Checking in with our technical team – We will be back in touch ASAP.

          Appreciated.

        2. Still waiting on further technical info, we will be back in touch as soon as possible. Thanks for your patience.

        3. Thanks again for your patience. I have heard back from the technician – ‘Bottom line is that 3 mv needs to get to the wall control since this is the brain of the AE operation, the motherboard is primarily the muscle. Until the communication between them is restored, it doesn’t pay to focus on any other issues. If the motherboard wall control isn’t receiving 3 mv then that needs to be corrected which is what I gathered from the reply. If it is outputting the correct voltage and voltage through to the wall control is intermittent, the most common issue is the crimped connections on the t-stat terminal block. At this point I would connect the wall control cable directly to the motherboard wire harness and bypass the block. One question, is the wall control cable inside a wall or tucked under some baseboard molding? If so, then that cable cannot be trusted.’

Keep us posted, happy to assist best we can. Thanks!

          1. Sorry for the delay. The problem indeed is the 3.3 volts. I have two control boards that do not have that output (3.3 vo;lts). That is very frustrating and expensive. They are getting the proper input from the power supply. One control board about 4 years old and one with 3 tries… both with no output of 3.3 volts.. Not sure I want to buy a third one. Absolutely can’t buy another control board until I have solved the mystery of why this is happening!
Any help in solving this mystery is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

  18. Good Evening – This is the closest thread I’ve found related to detailed thermostat issues. I replaced my main board last year, system has been running fine ever since. This year, started it up, ran fine a few weeks but now experiencing the oddest failure. The thermostat doesn’t seem to be keeping time. At first I assumed it was losing power, but when I watched more closely and then even put a wifi camera pointed at the thermostat – the ‘clock’ function simply isn’t working. It’s either not advancing at all or VERY slowly. I set it correctly last night at 7:25pm. It stayed 7:2pm until I went to bed after 11pm. It had finally advanced to 8pm on the thermostat by 750am the next morning. After that it advanced slowly (for instance by 909am it was registering 8:22pm. As of 8:30pm it’s only advanced to 8:48pm. Looking through the video, I did not see any evidence of the system loosing power or restarting/resetting.

Any thoughts on a solution beyond replacing the unit? I’ve never heard of a digital device losing time like that without other symptoms of power loss or outside factors.

    1. Thanks for contacting us Mark. Checking in with our lead techs on this one – will follow back up later today. Appreciated.

    2. Hey Mark, heard back from our tech team. Have not seen this kind of malfunction before. Generally speaking if we are on a service call and run into and wall control malfunction we replace the wall control. It’s good to note that the clock as a function is only necessary if the programmable t-stat program is being used otherwise it doesn’t affect operation.
For reference, here is the replacement Mt Vernon AE Wall Control – https://pellethead.com/product/quadrafire-mt-vernon-ae-edge-60-wall-control-thermostat/
